As I have said before, people constantly have said to me "you should write a book" . This was always in reference to our family exploits. With 6 children, many pets and multiple moves, something remarkable was always happening. This story recounts the time we moved from New York to Maryland. We decided to take a vacation when we moved. Now for our family that always meant a camping trip. We camped all over the country,at Walt Disney World, the grand Canyon, quite often on the ocean and many other exciting places. This time we decided to camp while we looked for a house and at the same time visit the nation's capital. Our daughter Patricia had a very best friend Lisa who lived in Michigan. To make the move easier she asked if Lisa could come camping with us.We said yes and so she came. Now Lisa had never camped before so this was her inaugural camping trip. With so many people our campsite was quite busy and loaded with coolers, suitcases, camp stove, fire ring etc. We had a huge tent for sleeping and a screen tent for cooking and eating. Lisa was in awe as we all worked together to set the camp site up. As this was not our "first rodeo", we were up and running in no time. After supper we were in the screen tent playing a board game when it started to rain. Undaunted by a little rain we moved the game into the sleeping tent. Well the "little rain" soon became a deluge of Biblical proportions. It quickly became evident that we needed to retreat to a hotel. We began to quickly pack everything we could (except for the tents). Poor Lisa wanted to help and as we were packing up everything in the screen tent the roof began to sag under the weight of the water. So Lisa stood with her hands raised like Moses leading the Israelites out of egypt, so the tent wouldn't collapse on top of us. Soaked to the bone & giggling a lot we piled into our van in search of a hotel. We started down the highway when "BOOM CRACK WOOSH" lightning struck a gas main just ahead of us beside the highway. Later, on the news we heard the flames shot 150 feet into the air. It certainly looked to be of epic proportions! The heat was unbelievable. We were the last car to drive through before they shut down the highway. Well THAT was exciting. Without further incident we found a hotel and settled in for the night. The next morning we got up and everyone was getting dressed and ready to have breakfast when the fire alarm sounded in the hotel. No this was not a drill. The hotel was on fire. Chris and I did a head count and Lisa was missing. Patricia yelled "I think she's in the bathroom!" I ran over to their room and started pounding on the door screaming "Lisa fire! Lisa Fire!"......she didn't come out, after much pounding and screaming she came out and said "WHAT?" Later she told us she didn't hear the fire alarm or me screaming FIRE!. She thought boy someone really needs to use this bathroom. Yeah, so that was Lisa's first vacation with us and her first camping trip.I know she never vacationed with us again AND I'm fairly certain she never has gone camping again either.
